(Cybertech) – Awards season is well underway, with the 93rd Academy Awards set to be aired on 25 April 2021.
It’s worth noting the pandemic’s impact on this nomination season. With cinemas closed across the world, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has – for the first time – permitted films that would have gone to cinemas to still be eligible if they debuted on streaming services. As a result, several of the nominees can be easily viewed with a subscription.
If you’re like us, you’ll want to watch the top contenders from the comfort of your couch anyway, and with the rise of services like Netflix and Amazon Prime, that’s easier than ever. Here, then, is how and where to watch the nominees for Best Picture at the 2021 Oscars:
Nomadland
Where to watch: Hulu
This Searchlight Pictures film is written and directed by Chloe Zhao. It follows the story of a woman in her 60s, who, after losing everything during the Great Recession, ends up living in a van and traveling through the American West. Nomadland is exclusive to Hulu.
The Trial of the Chicago 7
Where to watch: Netflix
This film is about the seven people who were on trial for charges related to an uprising at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. It was written and directed by Aaron Sorkin and is exclusive to Netflix.
Promising Young Woman
Where to watch: YouTube, Google Play, Vudu, and Amazon Prime Video
Written and directed by Emerald Fennell, Promising Young Woman tells the story of Cassandra Thomas (played by Carey Mulligan). She’s a woman haunted by a tragic event in her past. She also tries to exact retribution for her best friend, a victim of rape.
Mank
Where to watch: Netflix
David Fincher’s take on the life of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he finishes the screenplay of Citizen Kane for Orson Welles. It stars Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried and can only be viewed on Netflix.
The Father
Where to watch: Video on demand
Starring Anthony Hopkins, this film focuses on an elderly man who suffers from dementia and doesn’t want assistance from his daughter.
Judas and the Black Messiah
Where to watch: Video on demand (iTunes rental)
William O’Neal (played by Lakeith Stanfield) is offered a plea deal from the FBI and infiltrates the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party to gather intelligence on Chairman Fred Hampton (played Daniel Kaluuya). This film debuted on HBO Max but is no longer on the service.
Minari
Where to watch: Video on demand (YouTube rental)
Minari follows a Korean American family’s move from an Arkansas farm in search of the American Dream
Sound of Metal
Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video
Sound of Metal is exclusive to Prime Video. It’s about Ruben Stone (played by Riz Ahmed), a drummer who begins to lose his hearing.
